Stun Guns and Their Effectiveness in Self Defense.
Very high voltage/low amperage devices capable of disabling an attacker for several minutes, stun guns are very effective close quarters self defense tools. These little "shockers" rely, basically, on the same effect as touching a 9 volt battery to your tongue, only times about 30,000 or so! Ranging anywhere from around 100,000 to nearly a million volts, stun guns don't actually rely on pain for results (though they don't feel all that pleasant). The large amount of energy stored in the device is discharged into your attacker's muscles, causing them to spasm rapidly. All this twitching instantly depletes the receiver's muscular blood sugar and converts it to lactic acid, making it so that his muscles have no energy to operate. The stun gun will also interrupt all of the muscle controlling electrical impulses that are sent from the brain, usually causing him to lose his balance and fall to the ground.
Unlike splash back from pepper spray the power from stun guns will not transfer from the bad guy to you, even if he's touching you. This makes them excellent for self defense when you are grabbed, or are otherwise very close to your attacker. Commonly confused with a TASER® Devices, which can actually fire electric probes from a distance, stun guns are not effective past your arm's length, and you certainly don't want to get closer to an attacker just to defend yourself. This is why we always recommend that you carry pepper spray in combination with a stun gun. This way you will have something that is effective at a distance as well as in close quarters.
These and other similar devices are restricted or illegal in some cities and states. Please visit our page titled Stun Gun Restrictions before attempting to make a purchase.
